A Letter From Matt Cowan

In 1990, I was working for a large national brokerage firm. It was a great job with excellent opportunities, but because of the way the business was structured, I had to spend too much time at the office to provide the kind of service I wanted to give my clients. I started Cowan because I could see a way to make it different.

It was a great job with excellent opportunities, but because of the way the business was structured, I had to spend too much time at the office to provide the kind of service I wanted to give my clients. I started Cowan because I could see a way to make it different.

We've always structured things so that profit requirements are lower, making employee workloads lighter. Flexible scheduling and other benefits make it easier for people to have a full life outside of work, and we encourage our employees’ overall wellness. This healthy culture translates directly to our team's ability to offer extraordinary client service. We are committed to treating others the way they'd want to be treated. Our account managers are not insurance producers with specific sales goals, so our brokers and account managers are free to provide great care for our clients.

When we started, I penned a simple mission that remains the focus of our work: "To provide a healthy workplace for our employees and exceptional service to our clients.” I tell our clients that the first part of our mission statement exists to make sure the best people are here to take care of them. If it is a good place to work, people stay in their jobs, gain more knowledge and expertise, and are better equipped to serve. It has proven true: our team is second to none. 

Time has flown. Our services have grown from brokerage and consulting to include fully outsourced benefits administration, voluntary benefits, online enrollment and communication services, human resources consulting, wellness consulting, and individual and family insurance brokerage. In 2016, Cowan joined HUB International Inc., a global insurance brokerage with a known belief in the local service model. Our loyal clients receive the same superlative service they always have — now, with added resources and support.

It is hard for me to believe that we have had the chance to do this for over two decades now. The business has grown to be among the largest brokers in the country, and I have never been more convinced of the effectiveness of how we have structured our approach.
